They call us to support immigration policies that are humane, just, and rooted in the recognition that every person bears the image of God. Current enforcement practices violate these principles at every turn.

Immigration raids that tear families apart without warning or due process. Conditions in detention centers that violate basic standards of health and sanitation. Deportations to countries embroiled in active conflicts. The use of military assets and rhetoric against civilian populations who have committed no crimes. The systematic dismantling of the asylum system that this country has upheld for decades. We see these things happening in our communities, in our congregations, and to our neighbors. It often feels like we cannot win.

But, the fight isn't over yet.

Senators and Representatives have done little to stand up to the Trump administration, but they still have legislative, financial, and governing power they can wield if they are brave enough to do so. The time is now to make your voice heard to your legislators.

I am (your name and district/address), a constituent of yours, and I am a member of both The United Methodist Church and the Methodist Federation for Social Action — an independent organization of United Methodists committed to creating a prophetic witness on issues of justice, peace, and liberation. I write today with deep concern regarding the ongoing crisis in U.S. immigration enforcement and the escalating harm being done to immigrant communities. I am alarmed by what I see. Immigration raids that tear families apart without warning or due process, including raids conducted at sensitive locations like churches, schools, and hospitals. Conditions in detention centers that violate basic standards of health and sanitation. Deportations to countries embroiled in active conflicts, including the forced removal of individuals eligible for Temporary Protected Status. The use of military assets and rhetoric against civilian populations who have committed no crimes. The systematic dismantling of the asylum system that this country has upheld for decades. The Jesus of the Gospels did not build walls against the stranger. He crossed every border that religious institutions and political leaders had erected. MFSA has a century-long tradition of refusing to let the Gospel be co-opted by empire, and I am writing proudly as a product of that tradition today. My faith as a United Methodist Christian is a public one that calls for social holiness. Scripture is clear: "The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born" (Leviticus 19:34). Jesus declared his ministry one of liberation for the oppressed (Luke 4:18) and identified himself with the stranger and the imprisoned (Matthew 25). The United Methodist Social Principles affirm the inherent dignity of every person and the image of God they bear, the right to seek asylum, and the humanity of migrants and refugees. They call us to support immigration policies that are humane and just. This includes defending the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship against efforts to reinterpret or dismantle it. Current enforcement practices violate these principles at every turn. As your constituent and as a person of faith, I am asking you to: -Publicly oppose the use of military force, mass detention, and expedited deportation as enforcement tools, and restore sensitive location protections and due process rights, including the right to a hearing before an immigration judge -Support legislation that affirms the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship and the legal status of immigrants already living here, including those with Temporary Protected Status -Reaffirm the right of individuals to seek asylum under the Refugee Act of 1980 and the 1951 Refugee Convention -Reject the administration's dehumanizing rhetoric about immigrant communities and support legislation that reflects a humane, orderly, and dignity-centered approach to immigration With hope,
